Yearly round-up

Now that the race season has finished, at our recent AGM we reflected on the club’s achievements over the past year.  We finished 4^th club overall (out of 60) in the Triathlon Ireland National series rankings.  Team members were; Shane Scadding, Stephen Doyle, Peter Barry, Mike Bowes, John McDonald and David Devine. 

We also had many podium finishes with Chris Mintern, who is sill a Junior athlete coming 1^st in many races this year, including Clonea, Blackwater, Caherciveen & Waterville Triathlons.  Michael Moloney finished 1^st at Killarney Triathlon.  Shane Scadding finished 2^nd at Joey Hannon Triathlon & 2^nd at Butlerstown Duathlon.  Martin Kirwan came 3^rd at Naas duathlon & 1^st at Tramore Duathlon.  Derek Nolan came 1^st at Rathgormack duathlon with Kyle Barrett 3^rd senior at Bonmahon Triathlon and Margo O’Dowd finished 3^rd female at Bonmahon Triathlon.

We also picked up 10 medals at the recent Triathlon Ireland awards, our most successful to date.  Shane Scadding got gold for 1^st overall in his age-group in the National Series, also finishing a brilliant 11^th overall, and medals for 1^st in his age-group in middle distance champs and 3^rd at National duathlon champs.  Peter Barry received a bronze medal for finishing 3^rd overall in his age-group in the National Series (35^th overall).  Martin Kirwan received gold for 1^st overall in his age-group in the National Duathlon champs with Tom Casey receiving 2 medals for 3^rd overall in his age-group in the National Series and 2^nd in age-group in middle distance champs.  Mike Bowes came 2^nd overall in his age-group in the middle distance champs with Siobhan Kennedy receiving gold for finishing 1^st overall in her age-group in the middle distance champs. Ann Hennebry also received a medal for 3^rd overall in her age-group in the middle distance champs, a great achievement for her first time at this distance.  Stephen Doyle finished an excellent 18^th overall in the National Series rankings but due to a very competitive age-group, missed out on a medal. Excellent results considering there are almost 3000 athletes registered on the Triathlon Ireland series rankings.

We also had 13 clubmembers complete an Ironman (3.8k swim, 180k cycle, 42k run) with Ian Walsh doing 5 Ironman races in 5 consecutive days (91hours in total). The club was also represented at European Duathlon Champs in Limerick with Shane Scadding, Barry Lambe, Norma Goggin and Chris Mintern flying the flag.

We also had many members complete their first triathlon or duathlon with others taking the plunge and completing their first half ironman distance race so we had many achievements right across the board.  With almost 120 members, and many picking out goals for next year already, things are looking even better for next year.
