20th March 2010 - Large entry for Ballycotton 10miler

Last weekend, 12 club members travelled to Ballycotton to take part in their 33rd annual 10mile road race which attracts runners from all over the country and abroad.  Gaining an entry into this prestigious race is like winning the lottery which had approx 2400 runners on the day.  The weather caught many off guard as the warm sunshine was a stark contrast to the cold of last year’s race.  With so many runners lining the narrow country roads it took some of the runners at the back almost 3minutes to get past the start line so it was a slow start for some.

Martin Kirwan positioned himself up towards the front though which worked out well for him.  He maintained a steady pace throughout the race to finish 81st overall in an excellent time of 60.38mins, also acquiring the coveted top 100 finisher t-shirt.  Barry Lambe and Darryl Hale ran together for much of the race with Barry pulling away closer to the end to finish 113th overall in 62.48mins with Darryl just behind in 133rd place in 63.23mins.  Pauline Lambe had a great 1st half to the run but suffered a bit in the 2nd half due to a niggling injury but still had a brilliant race to finish in 65.38mins.  Martin Flynn was next home in an amazing 68.11mins with Noel Dillon back for the day from his current abode in Belgium to run in 69.39mins.  Noel Ryan was next home and after many months of being plagued with injury was delighted with his time of 70.32mins.

Norma Goggin was still recovering from a bad head and chest cold so didn’t really have any expectations so was thrilled with her time of 84.45mins.  She had got caught up at the back with a slow start but caught up with Eleanor Carey after 8miles and they both ran together and pushed each other on to the finish with Eleanor delighted with her time of 86.21mins.  Jenny Kervick and Dave Forristal both had great races to finish in 86.41mins and 89.47mins respectively.  Olive Costello made the mistake of wearing new runners for the race which caused a few problems but she was delighted with the race to finish in 1hr 40mins.
