Brian Boru Triathlon There were over 450 athletes in Kilalloe in Co. Clare recently to take part in the Sprint and Olympic distance races being held. The standard in the Sprint race was exceptionally high as it is part of the National Series League with everyone trying to get as many points as possible to help push them up the leaderboard. There were 3 starts to the sprint race followed by 1 start to the Olympic distance race with the swim taking place in Lough Derg. The cycle and run were slightly longer than the norm at 22k and 7k respectively, with the run being one of the toughest and steepest on the triathlon circuit. Chris Mintern had his usual brilliant swim to exit 4th out of the water but soon got overtaken by the more experienced and stronger cyclists but held his own on the run to finish 7th overall in 1.21.00, winning a prize for 2nd Junior. John McDonald made up a lot of time on the bike, posting the 13th fastest split of the day, to finish 27th overall in 1.27.22 with Paul Wyse not far behind in 1.31.17. Tom Casey won 1st prize in his age-group to finish in 1.39.10. Meanwhile, Michael Moloney took part in the Olympic distance race to finish just outside the podium. He posted the 24th fastest swim time so made up a lot of places on the bike and run to finish 4th place in 2.32.07. John Moloney and Gerard O’Donoghue also took part in finish in 3.06.39 and 3.16.07 respectively.
