20th July 11 - Top 2 places at Gold Coast Triathlon 12 club members took part in the Gold Coast sprint triathlon held in Clonea recently with some fantastic results. The swim was a bit shorter than usual at about 500m so the not-so-strong swimmers were happy and this was followed by a 20k cycle and 5k run. Junior athlete Chris Mintern, who is a fantastic swimmer, still had a good lead on most of the field as he exited 1st out of the water. He never relinquished his lead throughout the race as he posted the 2nd fastest bike split of the day and followed it up with the fastest run to finish 1st overall in 57.55mins. Veteran athlete Mike Bowes, who had a bit of catching up to do after emerging 20th out of the water, posted the fastest bike split of the day to bring him up the field to 2nd place which he held onto for the run to finish 2nd overall in 1.02.00. John McDonald, who had a busy morning returning from a race in West Cork where he got a puncture and had to retire from the race, decided to do this race on his return home. He also had a lot of catching up to do after the swim but after posting one of the fastest bike and run times of the day, finished 4th overall in 1.02.41. David Devine had a great start as he exited 3rd out of the water and finished strong in 7th place in 1.04.05. Frank Walsh’s fast run saw him overtake many to finish 9th overall in 1.04.17. Martin Flynn was delighted with the shorter swim and finished in 1.13.18 with Aidan McCarthy not far behind in 1.14.45 and Kieran Eaton finishing in 1.15.39. Olive O’Brien was first of our ladies home in 1.18.42 with Katie Kelly just behind in 1.19.55 and Margo O’Dowd finishing in 1.20.29. Justine McNichol is getting into the triathlon spirit in her first year of racing to finish in 1.26.52.
