1st July 2011 - Tough Hell of the West Triathlon The longest running Triathlon in the country took place in Kilkee recently for the 27th year, aptly named “Hell of the West”. There’s nothing ever easy about this race even in perfect weather conditions and this year was no different as the course involved a 1500m swim which was very choppy this year, a 44k cycle on undulating roads which had a strong headwind on the return leg followed by a tough 10k run which saw runners run up a cliff along the coastline for 5k before returning back the same way. It was raining for the start of the race which turned to warm sunshine by the time the athletes got to the run which made it tougher. Gaining an entry to this race is like winning the lotto and there were over 650 competitors on the day from all over the country, with a strong competitive field. We had 19 club members take part with most of us booking into holiday homes there for the weekend, with the race just being a part of the craic and experiences. Stephen Doyle had a great start to the race with his customary fast swim to exit 4th out of the water with Shane Scadding and Davin Power about 3mins behind in about 30th place. Shane put in his usual powerful bike, especially enjoying the strong winds to post the 4th fastest split of the day to bring him up to 5th place returning back into transition before heading out on the run. His long Ironman training did not suit this run though and he lost a few places here to finish 11th overall in 2.15.43, winning 1st place in his age-group. Davin Power and Stephen Doyle headed out onto the run neck and neck but due to a knee injury, Davin was forced to pull out after 3k on the run. Stephen had a good run to finish 20th overall in 2.22.00. Peter Barry emerged over 100th out of the water but after a brilliant bike in which he posted the 25th fastest time and followed it up by a strong run he finished 36th overall in 2.25.18. Emmet Kelly also saw himself power through the field on the bike and run to finish 39th overall in 2.25.44. It was Michael Bowe’s strong bike which also saw him overtake many competitors to finish 55th overall in 2.29.59 with Noel Ryan overtaking David Devine on the run for them to finish just 2 seconds apart in 2.31.08 and 2.31.10 respectively. Colin Fanning was next home in 2.35.28 with Andrew Hickey in 2.37.31 and Tom Casey in 2.40.05, winning 1st place in his age-group with Darryl Hale just behind in 2.40.36. David Connolly has been spotted doing loads of training lately which obviously paid off as he had a great race to finish in 2.41.55 with Aubrey Storey just behind in 2.42.38. Siobhan Kennedy who is still nursing a leg injury took a chance in hoping to finish the race as she has not run this distance in a long time but she need not have worried as she sailed through it to finish in 3.13.48, winning 3rd place in her age-group. Norma Goggin was delighted with her race, particularly the run, to finish in 3.23.24. We had a few non-finishers on the day with Ned Power who went into this race knowing that he was not going to do the run due an injury but he was happy with his swim and bike times. Barry Lambe, who is training hard for Ironman Regensberg in a few weeks time was also nursing a leg injury so just did the swim section and then dropped out for fear of further injury. Pio Wyse was disappointed as he was forced to retire during the swim as he had a chest infection and found it impossible to breathe in the choppy waters.
