18th July 2011 -Large Club turnout for Carrick Triathlon

Last weekend Carrick Triathlon Club hosted their annual Triathlon in Carrick with over 150 athletes from all parts of the country.  This is a great race for those starting out their triathlon career as most people find the swim the most daunting and the swim here taking place in the calm river Suir always offers a degree of comfort.  The fact that swimmers also swim downstream is a great advantage for the not-so-strong-swimmers as they don’t lose as much time to the stronger swimmers on the day.

After the 750m swim, the competitors then completed a 20k cycle loop followed by a 6k run which entailed running back along the scenic riverbank.

We had 19 club members take part, some using this as their debut triathlon.  There were 2 wave starts on the day based on age-groups, so people did not know where they had ultimately finished until the results were published.

Davin Power had a great race from start to finish as he emerged 5th out of the water with David Devine not far behind in 9th out of the water.  Davin held his own on the bike and after posting the 2nd fastest run split of the day, finished 4th overall in 59.44mins. Meanwhile, John McDonald who had been out of the water in 30th position, powered his way up through the field on the bike with the 5th fastest time of the day and with a strong run finished 5th overall in 1.03.20. Aubrey Storey was next home in 1.04.26.  Mike Bowes had started in the 2nd wave so he felt like he was behind lots of people but when the times were adjusted he finished 12th overall in 1.04.59 to win a prize for 2nd vet overall.  David Devine and Frank Walsh were only a second apart in 1.05.55 and 1.05.56 respectively to finish 14th and 15th overall with Frank making up a lot of ground on the run after posting the 8th fastest split of the day.   Darryl Hale finished 20th overall in 1.07.56 to claim 3rd vet prize with Kyle Barrett not far behind in 1.08.08.  Bernard Keane was next home in 1.10.12 after a great run with David (Dots) Connolly next in 1.10.44.  Gavin Downey is enjoying his 1st year of Triathlons finishing in 1.14.17 with Martin Flynn coming a long way from last year where this was his debut race, to finish in 1.14.27.  Michael Jacob is also enjoying his first year of triathlons to finish in 1.18.15.  Olive O’Brien was our first female home.  Things were looking great for her after the swim and cycle (where she posted the 3rd fastest female split) and she was very competitively placed but she lost a few places on the run but was happy with her race to finish in 1.20.13 with Margo O’Dowd, who had been steadily catching her on the run, finishing in 1.20.32.  Bob Cowman, also in his debut year of triathlons, finished in 1.27.38, with Shane McDonagh, who also used this race last year as his first venture into the triathlon world, was next home in 1.28.28 with Annette O’Mahony next in 1.29.01.  This was Justine McNichol’s first triathlon which she was delighted with to finish in 1.36.41.  Waterford Triathlon Club also won 1st Team Club prize with John McDonald, Aubrey Storey & David Devine on the winning team.
