28th June 2011 - Schull Triathlon Almost 300 competitors took part in the sprint triathlon in Schull recently where it was left to 4 of our female club members to fly the club colours. The 750m swim took place in the harbour and the water was absolutely freezing (the coldest the girls have swam in so far this year). The 20k bike is quite undulating, they had forgotten from previous years just how hilly it was until they were re-acquainted with the hills in the middle of the race again, with the 5k run probably being the easiest of the 3 disciplines on the day. Siobhan Kennedy, who is just coming back from a running injury had considered dropping out after the cycle but felt good on the day so carried on with the whole race to finish in 1.33.40, winning a prize for 1st in her age-group. Norma Goggin made up huge ground on the bike and run to finish in 1.41.02, winning a prize for 2nd in her age-group. Annette O’Mahony found the hills on the bike tough (especially as they were unexpected due the other girls telling her it was quite a flat course!) but was delighted with her race to finish in 1.46.37. Caroline Russell got a bad cramp in the swim due to the cold water and it never really went away for the bike and run but persevered to finish in a great time of 1.47.10. |
