14th June 2011 - Sun shines brightly for TriAthy Triathlons Last bank holiday weekend, Athy was taken over by triathletes competing in one of 4 races being held over the Saturday and Sunday. The 1st race to kick off was a new distance called the Double Olympic which consisted of a 3000m swim with just under half of it up against the current, 80k cycle and 20k run. We had 2 club members take part with Noel Ryan finishing an excellent 17th overall in 5.14.50 and Mark Power in 6.05.55, this being the longest distance that Mark ever took on. Straight after this race, the Olympic distance race started with a multiple of starts as there were almost 700 competitors, based on your age-group and gender so it was only after all the results were in and adjusted that people knew how they fared against others. Everyone found the run particularly difficult and uncomfortable especially with the heat and sun. We had 12 club members take part with some great results. John McDonald posted one of the fastest bike splits of the day to power his way up the field to finish 28th overall in 2.19.52 with Michael Moloney also having a great race to finish 35th in 2.21.34. David Devine and Paul Wyse finished very close to each other but did not know it until after the results were published, otherwise it may have been a different story with David finishing in 2.24.45 and Pio in 2.26.02. Colin Fanning came home in 2.29.24 with Darryl Hale in 2.31.34, Stephen Butler in 2.35.20 and Mark Daly in 2.42.07. Margo O’Dowd, Edwina Butler and Jenny Kervick decided to pick this race as their debut for an Olympic distance race and have been seen all over Waterford recently doing hard training! They were all thrilled with their results to finish in 3.01.20, 3.06.43 and 3.09.49 respectively. Gerry O’Donoghue and Catherine Galvin finished within seconds of each other in 3.14.11 and 3.14.13. The final race in the afternoon was the TryAthy distance of 400m swim which as all downstream, followed by a 13.6k cycle and 3.6k run. Bob Cowman was our only who finished in a great time of 1.08.06. The following day, we had 5 competitors take part in the sprint distance race which involved a 750m swim, partly upstream, followed by a 20k cycle and 5k run. Stephen Doyle had his customary great swim as he posted the 5th fastest of the day and he followed this by a strong bike to run to finish 8th overall in 1.03.15, 3rd in his age-group. Peter Barry posted the 3rd fastest bike split of the day to bring him up the field to finish 11th overall in 1.04.10, 2nd in his age-group. Aidan McCarthy was next home in 1.15.17 with Padraic Connolly just behind in 1.16.25. Caroline Russell was delighted with her race to finish in 1.28.58 with Annette O’Mahony finishing in 1.31.58.
