23rd May 2011 - Miserable conditions for middle distance race Tri An Mhi Triathlon Club hosted a very early middle distance (half ironman distance) race recently in Westmeath with over 100 eager competitors braving the chilly waters so early in the season to complete the 1900m swim. This was followed by a 90k cycle and 21k run over quite a hilly course. The weather played a major factor on the day as there was torrential rain for the duration with athletes claiming that the driest they were all day was in the swim. Others wondered how they had sunburnt shoulders but marks from hailstones on their faces at the same time! Stefan Green and Aidan McCarthy were our 2 brave club members who made the journey to compete with Stefan in heavy training for Challenge Roth, an Ironman distance race which takes place in early July. Stefan had a great swim to emerge 6th out of the water in 27.55mins so he set off on the bike with guns blazing. Disaster hit though with 20k to go as he got a puncture. Most people would not bother to mend a puncture in a shorter distance race but it is worth the while for this distance, but after mending the puncture and fixing a mechanical problem he had lost about 8mins, thus losing a lot of places. Unperturbed, he carried on and after posting the 9th fastest run of the day, finished a brilliant 9th overall in 5.05.24. Aidan had a slower swim than he had hoped but he made up a lot of places with a strong bike and held his own for the run to finish in 6.22.34, delighted with his first middle distance race.
