16th May 201 - Fantastic results at Joey Hannon Triathlon Last weekend the annual triathlons took place in Limerick with the very popular sprint and Olympic distance Joey Hannon races with 200 competitors in each race. Things didn’t look good the previous evening with floods and gale force winds but luck was with them on race day as the worst they had to suffer was strong winds on the bike and the odd shower on the run which acted as a cooling relief. The swim took place in the 50m UL pool and with 10 lanes with up to 13 swimmers per lane at times, things got a bit hectic. Swimmers were allocated lane according to their estimated swim times but if some people got this estimate wrong, then they either held up other swimmers or got held up themselves which caused some swimmers to lose patience and get very frustrated. We had 10 athletes take part in the Olympic distance race which involved a 1500m swim followed by a 40k bike and 10k run. Stephen Doyle was placed in the fastest swim lane and he lived up to his expectation as he posted the 3rd fastest time of the day at 20.20mins. Shane Scadding was 15th out of the water and had a lot of catching up to do as he was already 5mins down on the leaders. Cycling is his strong point though and he enjoyed battling his way through the strong wind and overtaking all but 2 competitors in front of him to post the fastest bike split of the day by over a minute to return to transition in 3rd place before heading out on the run. He posted the 5th fastest run time of the day but still maintained his place to finish 3rd overall in 2.01.14. Drama was to follow though as the ultimate winner of the race was disqualified for accepting outside assistance with a puncture, clearly breaking the rules of the race so Shane was awarded 2nd place instead. Stephen followed up his strong swim with a great cycle and run, only losing a few places to finish 7th overall in 2.05.51 (taking 4mins off last years time), winning a prize for 1st in his age-group. Michael Bowes was 73rd coming out of the water but made up huge ground on the bike as he posted the 9th fastest time and a strong run brought him up to finish 21st overall in 2.14.18, 3rd in his age-group (taking 3mins off last years time). This was John McDonald’s 1st pool swim so was a new experience as he emerged 120th out of the water. He also made up huge ground on the bike and run to finish 29th overall in 2.16.51. Tom Casey also had a lot of work to do after the swim as he set off on the bike in 123rd place but he managed to knock over 2mins off last years time to finish 62nd in 2.24.36, 3rd in his age-group. Stephen Butler took on this race for the 1st time and kept a steady pace throughout to finish 63rd in 2.25.02 with Marc O’Cathasaigh just a few seconds behind in 2.25.37. This was Darryl Hale’s 1st pool swim also and he was delighted to swim 2mins faster than predicted. He had a good cycle but his strong run saw him move up the field to finish in 2.25.55. It was also Noel Ryan’s strong run which saw him move up the field to finish in 2.28.10. Olive Costello took up the challenge of doing an Olympic distance race this year for the 1st time and today was her debut. She enjoyed the swim as she didn’t get held up too much but lost a bit of time before getting on the bike as her chain had come off. She was delighted with her race to finish in 3.01.44, 3rd in her age-group. In the Sprint distance race, Mark Daly and Jenny Kervick were our only 2 competitors and they were both doing a pool swim race for the 1st time so nerves were a little stretched beforehand. Neither had too many problems in their swim lanes with Mark heading out on the bike in 62nd place. He made up time on the bike and run to finish 34th overall in 1.26.01 with Jenny also making up time here to finish in 1.39.51. See our website for lots of photos from the day. |
