28 Feb 2010 Final Club Duathlon of the Season

Last Sunday we held our final pre season club training duathlon in the new location of Butlerstown in order to test out the course for our official Duathlon race there at the end of the month.  The day was sunny but quite windy in parts which was a bit draining on the energy levels towards the end of the race.  Right from the start of the 1st 5k run, there was a breakaway group with Martin Kirwan and Stefan Green leading the bunch into transition with Brian Slattery and Stephen Butler not far behind.  Martin had his customary slow transition which meant he had to catch Stefan on the bike, which he wasn’t long about doing, with his TT bike and disc wheel.  Martin was a man on a mission as he left everyone in his wake and, even though Stefan was gaining ground on the 2nd run, Martin maintained his lead to win in 62.58mins with Stefan finishing 2nd in 65.13mins.  There was another battle behind with Stephen and Brian overtaking each other a few times on the bike but Brian had the slight edge in the end to finish 3rd in 68.45mins with Stephen not far behind in 69.06mins.In the ladies race, Jacinta Power had a great lead of over 2mins after the 1st run but Norma Goggin put in a strong cycle to overtake her on the bike and headed out ahead onto the 2nd run.  But Jacinta had a swift transition and it wasn’t long before she overtook Norma to win the ladies in 1.21.58 with Norma 2nd in 1.22.33.  3rd place was also fought out between Helen Whyte and Olive Costello with Olive passing Helen on the 2nd lap of the bike but Helen gained much time back on the 2nd run, but not enough, so Olive finished 3rd in 1.31.15 with Helen 4th in 1.31.44.  There was a great club turnout and Thanks to the members who helped to marshal on the day.
