9th May 2011 - Victory at 1st race of season Last weekend 2 of the 1st Triathlon races of the season took place with the Waterville Triathlon in Kerry and the North Tipp Sprint in Nenagh. Chris Mintern was our only competitor in Waterville but he made sure not to be overlooked by anyone as he stormed his way to victory. The race started off great for him as he had over 1min lead coming out of the 750m swim. He never lost the lead as he posted the 3rd fastest 24k bike split of the day and by running the fastest 5k split of the day he further extended his lead to finish a massive 5mins ahead of his nearest rival in 1.18.53. A superb result for the 16yr old. Meanwhile in Nenagh, in the 1st of the National Series races of the year, we had 7 club members take part in this pool swim race. With over 220 competitors and with 6 swimmers per lane in the 25m pool, things can get a little hectic and frustrating at times, especially if a swimmer gets held up by someone slower and cannot pass. No such problems for Stephen Doyle on the day as he emerged 4th fastest out of the water after swimming well under 10mins for the 750m. It was going to be hard to sustain that lead on the bike and run but he made a good job of it and was delighted to finish 12th overall in 1.07.23. Michael Bowes emerged 64th fastest after the swim but made up loads of time on the bike after posting the 12th fastest split of the day and together with a strong run, finished 18th overall in 1.09.40, winning 1st place in his age-group. Paul Wyse was a bit nervous before the race as this was his 1st pool swim race. He didn’t get held up too much in his lane and really enjoyed the whole experience and was delighted with his finish of 35th overall in 1.12.26. Noel Ryan also made up lots of time on the bike and run to finish 44th in 1.13.45. This was also David Devine’s 1st pool swim race and he had a brilliant swim to post the 21st fastest time. His strong bike and run saw him finish in 1.15.54 with Gavin Quinlan finishing just behind him in 1.16.00. As they both started in different waves, they never knew they were so close throughout the race, I’m sure there would have been an interesting battle between them had they seen each other. Aidan McCarthy was next to finish in 1.23.03 after a steady race throughout. |
