25th April 2011 - European Duathlon Champs

Last weekend, four club members represented Ireland in the European Duathlon championships which were held in Limerick city.  There were over 300 competitors from all over Europe who had qualified to take part in their respective age-groups so the standard was very high.  The course was quite technical with 4 laps in the first 10k run, with lots of little loops.  The 40k bike had a few sharp turnaround points on the 5lap course where the cyclists had to almost stop to negotiate safely and the final 5k run had 2 laps.  All these laps were great for spectators though, with plenty of Irish competitors to shout on.  Norma Goggin was 1st to start with Barry Lambe 5mins later and Shane Scadding another 5min later.  All three really enjoyed the race, this being the 1st time that either Norma or Barry had done this distance.  Shane finished 6th in his age-group in 1hr 52mins, 24th overall.  Barry finished 69th overall in 1hr 58mins with Norma finishing 9th in her age-group in 2hrs 33mins.

In the afternoon, our Junior club member Chris Mintern took part in the Junior Elite race.  Being an elite race, they each had their own personal station in Transition with lots of room, their names displayed and lovely blue carpet.  Their race involved a 5k run, 21.6k bike and 2.5k run.  Chris had a brilliant race to finish 11th overall in 1.00.53, 2nd Irish Junior.  It was a brilliant experience for him and great boost to his triathlon career.  We would like to thank fellow club members Caroline Russell (who was also acting as Technical Official on the day), Ned Power, Pauline Lambe, Helen Whyte, Tom Casey, Siobhan Kennedy, Michael Carroll and Ann Hennebry who made a special journey to Limerick to offer support.  They made their presence known!
