10th April -  2 medals from National Duathlon Champs

Martin Kirwan, Shane Scadding and Stefan Green made one of the longest journeys possible recently to travel to a race in Ireland when they made their way to Donegal to take part in the National Duathlon Championships. It was more like a boys weekend away as they travelled and stayed in Martin’s campervan for the weekend, almost forgetting they had a race to do.

Duathlons are taken seriously in that part of the country with some very strong competition in all age-groups.  This race was never going to be easy as it comprised a 10k run, 40k cycle followed by a 5k run, a distance which our 3 club members had never undertaken before so they were a bit nervous as to how to go about the race.

The pace of the 1st run was extremely fast and our guys had to be careful not to get carried away and then blow up later on.  Shane and Martin returned to transition together in 13th place in 34.35mins before heading out on their bikes a few seconds apart, with Stefan about 3mins behind. The cycle course involved 5 laps with Shane and Martin actually getting faster per lap as the race went on, overtaking others along the way.  At this stage it became apparent that nothing separated the 2 lads with Martin being about 40m behind Shane consistently at the end of every lap (with Shane taking a sneaky look over his shoulder on a hair pin bend on each lap).  They both posted the exact same time on the bike, being 7th fastest overall before heading out together on the final run.  They ran shoulder to shoulder, not a word being spoken, both pushing the other on.  It was only a few hundred meters from the finish that the pace quickened up and, when it came to a sprint finish, Shane had the faster legs to finish 8th overall in 1.54.43 with Martin in 9th place in 1.54.47.  A great battle, with 2 club members never being so closely matched.  This was enough for Shane to win a bronze medal in his age-group with Martin winning a gold medal in his age-group. Stefan finished 26th overall in 2.04.03, after a strong bike brought him up the field.  Photos and full results can be found on our website www.waterford-triathlon.com
