12th March 2011 - Waterford Duathlon in Butlerstown - Race 1

Last weekend we held the 1st of our Duathlon races in Butlerstown with almost 100 competitors despite the wet conditions early in the morning.  The Butlerstown GAA centre and grounds were our base for registration and transition and there was great anticipation and excitement before the race.

The 1st 5k run started off with a brisk pace with Keith Heary (TriCW) and Colm Sheahan (Cork Tri) first back for their bikes with Kenny Curran (Carrick Tri), Paddy Quinn (Ennis Tri) and Shane Scadding (Waterford Tri) not far behind.  The stronger cyclists soon became clear though as Shane made his way into the lead before the end of the 1st lap of the 3 lap 20k bike course.  Keith didn’t let him out of his sight though as Kevin Shelly made his way from 9th up to 3rd before the end of the bike leg to head out on the run just meters behind Keith.  Shane had just 16secs of a lead though and knew he would have a battle on his hands as he headed out onto the final 3k run.  Keith caught him after 1.5k with Shane staying with him for as long as he could but eventually had to surrender as Keith was the stronger runner to finish 1st overall in 59.36 with Shane 2nd in 59.48.  Kevin Shelly had 1min of a lead on his nearest rival heading out onto the final run but Colm Sheahan posted the fastest run of the day to catch and overtake Kevin on the home straight to finish 3rd in 1.00.16.

In the ladies race, after the 1st run, Diane Behan, who is well know locally as a strong runner, had over one and a half minute lead on the next lady, local runner Liz Nolan with Aoife Mahony (Cork Tri) just behind but Aoife, being a much stronger cyclist caught Diane on the bike and they both came back into transition together before heading out on the final run.  There was never a doubt though that Diane wouldn’t retain the lead as she pulled away from Aoife right from the start to win comfortably in 1.12.31 with Aoife 2nd in 1.13.41.  Jacinta Power (Waterford AC) wasn’t happy with her 1st but she soon found her legs on the bike and powered her way into 3rd place which she maintained for the final run to finish 3rd in 1.16.27.

1st male Vet home on the day was Kenny Curran (Carrick Tri) in 6th place overall in 1.01.42 (after losing 5th place in a sprint finish to Paddy Quinn) with Jim Baldwin (Waterford Tri) 2nd vet in 1.05.40, 11th overall.  1st Female Vet home was Liz Nolan in 1.19.46.  1st Junior home was local athlete Kieran Jackson who had a great race to finish 29th overall in 1.10.41. Full results can be found on our website www.waterford-triathlon.com.

We would like to Thank everyone involved in organising this race especially to our many club members who gave up the opportunity to race to help marshal instead (over 40 in total) which resulted in a very safe and successful race.  We would also like to thank the Gardai, local residents, Butlerstown GAA and the Holy cross pub for their help and hospitality.

Due to road closure we are unable to hold our next duathlon in Fenor as proposed so we will return here to Butlerstown again on 9th April, 11am start.
