14 Feb/21st Feb 2010
Limerick Duathlon Series The 1st race in the Limerick duathlon Series took place on 14th Feb. Martin Kirwan claimed a podium place. Norma Goggin, Olive O'Brien and Olive Costello also took part. This consisted of a 3.6k run out and back run, a 14.3k out and back undulating cycle followed by a repeat of the 1st run. Almost 140 competitors turned up which is the largest entry they have ever had. Martin Kirwan was there early for registrations so had the pressure of having Bib no. 1 for the race. The pace was very fast for the 1st run, especially as part of it is up a steep hill and Martin was caught a bit off guard. He headed out onto the cycle in 7th place but his strong bike soon became apparent as he overtook everyone in front to come back to transition in 1st place, leader of the race, posting the fastest bike time of the day. As the cycle was quite short he could not gain too much of a lead though and found himself in 2nd place on the run straight away. He fought hard to retain 2nd place but lost out not far from the finish but was delighted with 3rd place overall in 50.10mins. An excellent result and a great start to his season which also saw him knock 2mins off last year’s time. Meanwhile, Norma Goggin, Olive O’Brien and Olive Costello were also having a great race. Norma had the fastest 1st run of the 3, heading out onto the bike but Olive O’Brien had a faster cycle and caught up with Norma in transition to head out on the run ahead of her. Norma had the faster legs though and finished strongly in 1.10.20 with Olive O’Brien coming home in 1.13.50. Olive Costello meanwhile was also gaining ground on Olive O’Brien but just ran out of road and was delighted with her time of 1.14.22 knocking 2mins off last year’s time. The 2nd race of the Limerick duathlon series took place on 21st Feb with another large entry despite the fact that it had snowed for a few hours previously. The roads were dry and safe enough for the race to go ahead which was a relief as news came in that the duathlon which was scheduled to take place in Naas and which some of our club members had travelled to, was cancelled due to the snow. Norma Goggin was flying the flag for the club in Limerick in this 3.6k run, 14.3k cycle and 3.6k run. She had a brilliant race to knock almost 3mins off her time of 2 weeks previously which was mainly due to a faster bike time but she had much stronger legs for on the 2nd run this time to improve there also to finish in 1.07.52.
