5th March 2011 - Podium finish at Rathgormack Duathlon Last weekend Carrick Triathlon Club returned to Rathgormack after a break last year to host one of the toughest Duathlon races on the calendar, “Conquer the Comeraghs”. This involved a hilly 5k first run after which athletes had an out and back 20k cycle which had a series of climbs and technical descents followed by a 2 lap 3k run. There were 45 athletes at the start line, including 9 of our own club members. All athletes are expected to know the course (from various race briefings and maps) and that point was brought home last weekend when 21 runners missed the 1st left hand turn and went in the wrong direction for a few kilometres before being turned back. This wrong turn had even tougher hills on it so was a very tired looking bunch arrived back into Transition after running almost 10k, with the other half of the field well out on the bikes by now. Among the leaders of the 10k runners were our own John McDonald & Barry Lambe with Kyle Barrett and Mark Power also doing the longer run. Credit to them all though, they did not give up without a fight but they had a tough job ahead to catch up with current race leaders which included our own Derek Nolan who had powered his way up to the lead on the bike. After an exciting wait to see what enfolded out on the bike course, Derek Nolan came back 1st off the bike but Dave Richardson (Limerick Tri) who had ran the 10krun, had made up huge ground on the bike and came back in 2nd place. Derek had a great run though and held on to the lead to win the race in 1.18.56. Owen Byrne also had a strong bike to finish 7th overall in 1.24.39. Both of these had initially taken the wrong turn but luckily turned back when they realised their mistake. Meanwhile, Barry Lambe made up a huge amount of ground on the bike and 2nd run to climb his way back up the field to finish 8th overall in 1.25.08, (2nd place for the longer run athletes). Martin Flynn, who was running with an injury after his race in Tramore last week, was delighted with his performance to finish 14th in 1.27.44. John McDonald suffered on the bike after the fast 10k run and had to get off and stretch out cramps at one stage so lost a lot of time on the race leaders. He finished strong though in 20th place in 1.30.14. Norma Goggin loves the tough hills of this course and was rewarded with her efforts as she finished 2nd lady overall in 1.35.13. Kyle Barrett and Mark Power were next home, tired after their longer than expected race, not fully realising what had happened until they finished but were happy with their times of 1.35.45 and 1.38.55 respectively. Shane McDonagh was next home in 1.43.10.
