1st March 2011 Martin retains title at Tramore Duathlon Last weekend saw the first of the local duathlons take place with the annual duathlon in Tramore with over 200 competitors take part. This race is ideal for first timers or for kick-starting the season as the distances are shorter than usual with each run being 3k and the cycle being 16k. This, plus the glorious sunshine brought 30 of our own club members to the start line. The 1st run started off at a blistering pace with John McDonald, Martin Kirwan and Jim Baldwin in the middle of the leaders coming back into Transition for their bikes. Martin lost a lot of time trying to close his helmet and gave away a good bit of a lead before he finally got out on the bike. Fuelled up on annoyance at himself, he pedalled hard to overtake everyone and by the time he got on to the Waterford road had put himself in the lead. He maintained this lead for the cycle and came back into transition with a bit of time to spare over the next competitors. He ran hard for the 2nd run and crossed the finish line in 1st place in 45.23mins, beating last year’s record which he had also set. Meanwhile, John McDonald, Stefan Green & Barry Lambe had put in a great effort on the bike also and came back into Transition all in the top 10. They fought off all other competition and finished not far apart with John 7th overall in 48.53, Stefan 8th in 49.01 and Barry 9th in 49.05, with Stefan picking up 1st prize for male vet. Michael Moloney was next home in14th place in 50.24 with Jim Baldwin, who had lost some time in the bike, making it all back up again on the run finishing in 16th in 50.34. Pierre deLeaster has obviously been working on his running over the winter as he combined his usual strong bike with a very strong run to finish 21st overall in 51.41 picking up 1st prize for Junior. Paul Wyse made up a lot of ground on the 2nd run also to finish 23rd overall in 52.09 with Kyle Barrett, competing in his 1st duathlon race, just behind in 52.12. Stephen Butler, (who had tried experimenting with putting his cycle shoes onto his pedals before the cycle, and then lost loads of time as they fell off on his exit) was next home in 27th place in 52.41 with Darryl Hale, who was on his new shiny bike just behind in 30th place in 52.46. Derek Nolan and Dermot Power were just seconds apart in 55.01 and 55.09 with Mark Daly next home in 55.46. Seconds also separated Louis O’Carroll and Owen Byrne who finished in 56.05 and 56.08. Pauline Lambe had a brilliant 1st run to be 1st lady back into Transition, but because she has only been on her bike once or twice in about 2 years, she lost a lot of ground on the cycle but managed to make some of it back up on the 2nd run to finish 5th lady overall in 56.24. Michael Cox was next club member home in 56.45 with Bruce Wardrop in 56.56 and Martin Flynn, who pulled his hamstring on the run, next home in 57.21. New club members Gerard O’Donoghue and Ger Maher also had great races to finish in 60.42 and 61.09. Brian O’Rourke and Stephen Daly were next home in 63.07 and 63.29. Shelly Brennan made up loads of ground on her 2nd run to finish next in 64.33. Next we had the 4 ladies Edwina Butler, Jenny Kervick, Norma Goggin & Olive Costello who had all worked hard up to the final run and then decided to run together and have a chat and crossed the line together in 65.20. Annette O’Mahony was next home in 70.47.
