30th Jan 2011 -Competitive club training duathlon

Last Sunday morning we held our club training duathlon in Butlerstown.  The morning started out stressful for some as the 1st phase of Valentia triathlon race (which takes place in May) opened on-line at 8am and sold out in 10mins but many of our club members were successful in gaining entry.

The strong sun didn’t do much to warm up the air with most people claiming to have never warmed up for the duration of the race.  Most people were hoping for a nice handy race pace, especially so early in the year, but 16yr old Chris Mintern had other ideas as he started the 1st 5k run at a sprint pace with everyone else trailing in his wake.  Shane Scadding took up the challenge and finished the run a few seconds behind Chris.  They both pushed hard on the bike with the lead changing a few times over the 20k 3lap course.  It was only on the final hill of the final cycle lap that Shane pulled away for good and maintained the lead for the 3k run which followed to come home 1st in 1.02.55 with Chris 2nd in 1.05.20.  Paul Wyse and Davin Power raced together and finished 3rd and 4th not far behind in 1.06.15.

It was a great day out for club members with some choosing just to treat it as at training session and just do part of the course while others went as fast as they possible could.  Many took loads of time off their overall results from our official race here last March.  Thanks to all the club members for taking part and for marshalling.
