27th December 2010 - Tough Baldy Man Race

The 10th annual Baldy man race took place in Tramore recently and despite unpleasant weather conditions, over 200 runners took part, eager to run off some of the excesses of Christmas.  It rained for the duration of the race with a head wind on the return leg making it more difficult.  The tide was also in which forced runners to choose between running on the stones and running in the sea for the first half of the run.  The return leg of the run took place on the backstrand which was also tricky as the sand was very soft in parts and you could find your legs submerged quite a bit.  This is what makes this 5.5mile run so much fun, interesting and different.

This was Shane Scadding’s 1st time doing this race, and he found it quite exciting and was happy to finish 15th overall in 36.24.  Next home was Brian Slattery (after he nearly got lost in the deep sand) in 39.44 with Dermot Power not far behind in 40.14, claiming a prize for 1st over 50 male.  Tom Brennan was next home in 42.10 with Stephen Butler just behind in 42.23.  Louis Carroll and Tom Casey had a sprint finish with Louis just crossing the line ahead in 43.28 and Tom in 43.29.  John Brennan was not far behind in 44.00 with Paul Hallahan just seconds behind in 44.08.  Marc O’Cathasaigh was next home in 45.19 with Shelly Brennan, being our only female club competitor, finishing in 46.15.  Martin Flynn and Ger Hearne were delighted with their races to finish In 46.35 and 49.19 respectively.
