10th August 2010 - Cruel run at Little Bo Peep Triathlon Kenmare was the setting for the Little Bo Peep Olympic distance triathlon in which we had 5 members take part (with club member Caroline Russell being the race referee on the day also). The race started in the afternoon to allow for the strong current in the lake to subside for the 1500m swim. The 40k cycle was undulating with the 10k run being described as cruel! It involved running straight up the side of a mountain and back down again with the downhill being as painful as the uphill. Andrew Hickey got off to a good start in the swim to emerge 48th out of the water but he cycled and ran hard to make his way up to finish 26th overall in 2.18.47. Swimming is Darryl Hale’s weakest discipline of the three as he emerged 89th out of the water, but was wasn’t long about passing many cyclists and the tough run obviously suited him as he posted the 10th fastest split on the day. All this was enough to bring him up the field to finish 39th overall in 2.22.34. Siobhán Kennedy is another person who relishes the tough runs as is was here that she made up lots of places also to finish in 2.44.48, winning 1st place in her age-group. Ned Power, who has just resumed triathlons this year after a long absence due to injury decided to stop his race after a short distance into the run as his legs were not up to it on the day and Norma Goggin, who was also fighting off an injury decided to turn back after a few miles on the bike. They were both disappointed not to finish the race but will be back stronger soon.
