24th August 2010 - Tramore Metalman Triathlon Last weekend the 3rd annual Triathlon took place in Tramore with over 200 athletes taking part with 25 of our own members participating on the day. The 750m swim was quite rough, more suited to surfing than swimming so it suited the strong, confident swimmers. The 20k cycle was perfect for time-trialing as it’s a fast, flat course with the 5k run taking the athletes down and back up the beach to the finish. Newcomer, Eoin Lyons had a great start to his race and his triathlon career as he emerged 1st out of the water after a strong swim with almost 30secs lead on the next competitor. He couldn’t hold on to this lead for long though as he hasn’t been doing much training on the bike or run so the inevitable happened when Martin Kirwan, among others, whizzed past him on the bike. Martin had a lot of work to do as he emerged 44th out of the water but he posted the 2nd fastest bike time of the day and the 5th fastest run to bring him up to finish 8th overall in 59.03, delighted with his race just a few weeks after completing Ironman Switzerland. Emmet Kelly had a great swim to emerge 14th out of the water but he lost a few places on the bike but then gained them back on the run to finish 13th overall in 1.01.07. John McDonald made up a huge amount of places on the bike as he posted the 7th fastest time of the day to finish 14th overall in 1.02.19. Barry Lambe was testing out his legs after also completing Ironman Switzerland just recently so he was happy with his time of 1.04.05 to finish 21st overall. Paul Wyse also had a solid race to finish 25th in 1.05.12 with Colin Fanning next home in 34th place in 1.06.30. Louis O’Carroll, another of our Junior athletes, was next home in 1.08.03 with Eoin Lyons holding on after his brilliant swim to finish the race with a strong run in 1.08.47 in 43rd place. Brian Slattery also had a great run with his post Ironman Switzerland legs to finish in 1.09.05 with John Brennan just behind in 1.09.11. Martin Flynn had a brilliant swim for someone who could barely swim a few months ago but was unlucky to skid on wet road as he rounded the last bend on the bike (just a few feet away from where he crashed off in a duathlon race last year) but was lucky to get away with just some nasty cuts and scratches. He was recovered enough to pass a few more people on the run to finish in 1.11.07 with Siobhán Dunphy just seconds behind in 1.11.10 and John Carew a few more seconds behind in 1.11.49. Training partners Derek Barrett and Mark Daly were separated by almost 4mins after the swim with Derek getting a good head start but Mark slowly reeled him in on the bike and run and Derek was running scared at the end of the race with only seconds separating them but Mark ran out of time with Derek crossing the line in 1.14.35 with Mark just meters behind in 1.14.59. Their next head to head will be the Big one in Kenmare next weekend. Jenny Kervick was one of the few who actually enjoyed the challenge of the swim and it set her up nicely to finish in 1.16.19 to win a prize for 1st female Vet with John Moloney next home in 1.17.17. Katie Kelly was next home in 1.18.05 with Dave Forristal overtaking Olive O’Brien on the run to finish in 1.18.30 and 1.18.37 respectively. Margo O’Dowd had a bazaar moment in transition as, with her helmet on, she got her head caught in her bike as she bent down and it felt like ages before she could free herself. She eventually got going and finished the race in 1.19.12. Peter Roche and Shane McDonagh were also home within seconds of each in 1.22.24 and 1.22.42. Edwina Butler did not enjoy the swim and was happy to complete it at all but once she got on solid ground she made up places on the bike and run to finish in 1.24.04. Liam Power was delighted with his race as this was his 1st one and he hadn’t thought he would ever complete one. He was over the moon to finish in 1.29.38 with Deborah White coming home in 1.39.33.
