24 Jan 2010 First Race of the Season Last weekend the 1st race of the season kicked off in Punchestown race course as the 1st race of the Naas Duathlon series took place. There was a very competitive field with athletes from all over the country taking part as this was a qualifier for the World Duathlon Championships in Scotland later this year. The 1st run was 3.5k and saw the athletes run around the edge race course. The 20k bike was pretty undulating and was an out and back course with the 2nd 3.5k run being the same as the 1st. There was freezing fog and icy road conditions on the morning of the race but that didn’t deter 150 athletes from turning up to take part, with our own members Noel Dillon and Olive O’Brien among them. It was a cold day to make their season debut, with ice hanging off their bikes by the time they got to Naas. Noel put in a strong performance to finish 55th overall in 1.06.39. Olive was delighted that she had persuaded herself to do this race as she hadn’t done as much training lately as she would have liked. She finished impressively in 1.23.07. |
