10th Aug 2010 - Podium Finish at Gold Coast Triathlon

Clonea recently with 100 eager triathletes testing out the course for the 1st time.  The sea swim was 750m followed by a 20k bike and 5k run over an undulating course.

Chris Mintern, our youngest member at just 16 yrs was 1st of out the water with a huge lead of almost 2mins on the next swimmer.  He worked hard on the bike but his bike handling inexperience became evident when he failed to slow down at a sharp bend and ended up in the ditch!  He sat there for a few moments, covered in cuts and scratches, with his bike a little worse off for wear, thinking his race was over but after the next cyclist overtook him he decided to give it another go and fixed himself and the bike back together and got back into Transition in 2nd place.  He fought hard on the run but had lost too much time and got overtaken but was happy to finish 3rd overall in 1.06.59.

John McDonald and Michael Moloney had a nice battle with Michael out of the swim about 1min ahead of John who was 31st out of the water.  They both posted the same time on the bike, both making up lots of places, so it all came down to the run where John overtook Michael just at the finish to come home 5th overall in 1.10.48 with Michael just behind in 6th place in 1.10.49.  Paul Wyse got a good head start on the field as he posted the 7th fastest swim of the day and he followed that up with a strong bike and run to finish 10th overall in 1.12.56.  Aidan McCarthy and Conor Murphy had another battle as Aidan went out on the bike almost 2mins ahead of Conor after the swim.  After both posting similar times on the bike, it was on the run where Conor made inroads into Aidan’s lead but he just ran out of road as he couldn’t quite catch him and Aidan finished in 1.27.25 with Conor just behind in 1.27.35.  Margo O’Dowd was happy to get onto the bike after her swim as she made up lots of places on the cycle and had a great run to finish in 1.31.59 and win a prize for 1st female Vet home on the day. Katie Kelly was next home after having the 16th fastest swim time of the day to finish in 1.32.51.
