14th August 2010 - Prizes in Caroline Kearney Triathlon The very popular Caroline Kearney memorial Olympic distance triathlon took place in Lough Ennell in the midlands recently with 260 athletes taking part from all over the country. The swim was just one big loop of 1500m which was lovely and flat in the lake with the 42k bike including 2 laps which had one or two short hills in it but had a strong wind which made it difficult in parts. The 10k run was an out and back route which was dead flat with sections of it off road so it was good to see how you were faring against your competitors. Davin Power was happy with his swim as he emerged 24th out of the water, in the knowledge that he would be stronger on the bike and run. He worked hard to post the 11th fastest bike split and the 5th fastest run of the day which brought him up to finish 6th overall in 2.05.04, to win 3rd in his age-group. He also knocked almost 9mins off his time from last year. Aubrey Storey has put in a few good months training for Ironman Switzerland so returned to this race much stronger than last year. He headed out onto the bike in 36th place but after knocking minutes off the bike and run times from last year to post the 7th fastest splits in both, he finished 10th overall in 2.06.04. Peter Barry had some catching up to do as he headed out onto the bike in 83rd place after the swim but a very strong cycle brought him well up the field and he followed it up with a strong run to finish 29th overall in 2.15.10 to get a prize for 3rd in his age-group. Tom Casey returned here to one of his favourite races to try out his post-Ironman Switzerland legs and they didn’t let him down. He had a spectacular race to knock 14mins off his time from last year to finish in 2.21.28 and to win a prize for 3rd in his age-group. This was Padraic Connolly’s 1st time doing this race and still pretty new to Olympic distance triathlon but he really enjoyed the whole race to finish in 2.37.42.
