7th August 2010 - Difficult Galway Triathlon swim

On the same day in Carna in west Galway, Padraic Connolly was our only competitor in their annual Olympic distance triathlon.  The swim was supposed to be the regular distance of 1500m but there was a problem with the buoys not being anchored properly and the distance turned into over 2000m for the unsuspecting swimmers.  There was also a strong current which hampered efforts of a fast swim.  Swimming is Padraic’s weakest discipline but he was still shocked when he emerged out of the water in 1hr 17mins -  he has never swam for that long before! The 40k cycle was over remote parts of west Galway with the 10k being quite hilly but it was on the run where Padraic excelled and made up the most places to finish in 3hrs 38mins
