7th August 2010 - Lough Hyne Triathlon

The little town of Baltimore was alive with over 200 athletes taking part in their Olympic distance triathlon recently.  The 1500m swim consisted of 1 loop in and around the many boats and yachts moored there.  The 44k cycle is one of the toughest courses on the race circuit with many undulating sections and which ends with a steep hill which many get off the bike and walk.  The 10k run also consists of much uphill running which makes this race one of the toughest Olympic distance races around.

Peter Barry has improved his swimming hugely since last year and emerged 51st out of the water.  His strong bike saw him overtake many on the tough course in which he posted the 18th fastest split of the day.  He maintained a steady run to finish 17th overall in 2.20.12 and win a prize for 3rd in his age-group.  Aidan McCarthy and training buddy Conor Murphy, who is new to triathlon this year, also took part with Aidan having a 2min lead on Conor after the swim and increasing it by over another minute on the bike but Conor caught him back up on run and they both finished together in 3.12.02.
