24th July 2010 - Kinsale Sprint distance race Cork Triathlon club held their annual sprint distance race in Kinsale with over 230 participants. The weather didn’t look promising before the race as it was raining but luck went their way as it cleared up for the race. The 750m swim was in a sheltered bay with the 20k bike on an undulating out and back course. The race name “King of the Hill” gets its name from the 5k run which competitors meet as soon as they get off the bike. Training buddies, Andrew Hickey and Ned Power both started in different waves, 10mins apart so they had no idea who was ahead of who at any stage. Andrew swam 1min faster than Ned but Ned pulled back that time on the bike after posting the 19th fastest time of the day. They both had almost identical runs to finish just seconds apart with Andrew finishing 23rd overall in 1.15.33 and Ned 24th in 1.15.44, also winning a prize for 2nd vet overall. Ian McNulty also had a great race gaining places they whole time throughout the day to finish 32nd overall in 1.18.05 with Dave Forristal next home in 1.33.35. Caroline Russell panicked a bit in the swim and was close to turning back to shore. She stopped and calmed herself down though and continued on and made up lots of places on her strongest discipline, the bike. She enjoyed the challenge of the hills on the run to finish in 1.46.44.
