24th July 2010 - Kilkenny hosts their 1st Triathlon race

There was a new local Triathlon race on the calendar this year with the inaugural Triathlon being held in Kilkenny city recently with over 450 participants taking part in either the sprint or standard distance races.  For the standard distance race, the 1st 400m of the swim was upstream which gave the stronger swimmers an advantage and a chance to get a head start.  The 40k cycle was over 2 laps with the 10k being 4 laps along the Nore river walk, through scenic wooded area and then finishing out through the arch of Kilkenny Castle.

Davin Power had a brilliant start to head out onto the bike in 4th position after the swim.  He worked hard here to bring himself up to 2nd position before heading out on the run.  He maintained this position to finish 2nd overall in 2.04.28, his 3rd podium finish this year.

Michael Moloney headed out on the bike in 33rd place after this swim but soon worked his way up the field after posting the 10th fastest cycle.  He followed this up with a strong run to finish 9th overall in 2.15.53.  Emmet Kelly has a super swim to head on the bike in 16th place and after a strong bike and run to finished 12th overall in 2.17.08.  John McDonald had his work cut out for him as he headed out on to the bike in 61st place after his swim but after posting the 12th fastest bike split and 11th fastest run of the day, it brought him up to finish 13th overall in 2.18.10.  Paul Wyse was next home after gaining loads of places on the bike and run also to finish 26th overall in 2.26.08.  John Brennan also had a lot of work to do after his swim but he passed lots of people on the bike and run to finish in 2.35.21.  Anna Louise Muldoon was a bit apprehensive as this was her 1st Olympic distance race and she felt she should have done more training but she had a great race to finish in 2.57.44.  Sean Roche was next home, delighted with his race to finish in 3.12.42.

In the sprint distance race which was over the same course but just half the distance, Aidan McCarthy was our only participant.  He headed out onto the bike in 70th place after the swim but he made up a lot of place on the bike and held in for the run to finish 53rd overall in 1.22.44.
