17th July 2010 - Great club representation at Carrick Triathlon The annual Carrick Triathlon took place recently with over 350 athletes competing on the day in either the Sprint distance race or the shorter novice Try-athlon race. There were 2 starts to the Sprint race, 5mins apart with the Try-athlon 5mins later again. This race is perfect for the weaker swimmers as the current, no matter how strong will help you swim the distance in a much faster time than usual. It is also a great race for first-timers who may be apprehensive about swimming in open water of which we had a few. We had 27 members taking part on the day, and, with the fast 750m swim, many of them headed out on the 20k bike within seconds of each other so that was where the real race started. The 5k run was pretty flat which involved running back along the scenic riverbank. Junior member Chris Mintern had a brilliant swim to emerge 1st overall out of the water but, with the fast swim, he did not have a huge advantage and was overtaken on bike, his weakest discipline. Davin Power was 10th out of the water, over a minute later, but he posted the 5th fastest bike time to head out onto the run in 4th place with almost 2mins behind 3rd place so he had his work cut out for him. He ran hard though and caught and passed Kevin Shelly of Carrick Wheelers with about 700m from the finish to cross the line in 3rd place overall in 1.01.43, his 2nd podium finish this year. Chris, meanwhile, also had a great run to finish 10th overall in 1.04.37. Stefan Green emerged 7th out of the water after a brilliant swim but, after losing a few places on the bike, maintained his position on the run to finish 14th overall in 1.06.02. Michael Moloney meanwhile, made up places during his strong bike to finish 20th overall in 1.07.01 with Emmet Kelly just seconds behind in1.07.23. Andrew Hickey finished 32nd overall in 1.09.11 with newcomer John McDonald having a great race to finish in 1.10.58 with another newcomer Paul Wyse just behind in 1.11.15. Ian Walsh has made a comeback after a brief triathlon career 2 years ago to finish in 1.11.52 with John Brennan not far behind in 1.12.12 and Louis O’Carroll and Michael Cox just seconds apart in 1.14.17 and 1.14.29 respectively. Siobhán Dunphy had a bit of work to do in the ladies race after her swim, but she posted the 3rd fastest female bike split which brought her back into contention and, with a strong run, she finished 2nd female overall in 1.16.36. Ben Casey decided to squeeze in one more race before his upcoming nuptials and was happy with his race to finish in 1.18.15. Mark Daly is having a great 1st season as he finished in a strong 1.20.08. Olive O’Brien had a brilliant swim and cycle to head out onto the run 2nd female overall but her lack of run training came back to haunt her as she got overtaken by about 10 ladies but she was happy with her race to finish in 1.21.36 with Ger Hearne just seconds behind in 1.21.46 and Tom Brennan next home in 1.22.36. Margo O’Dowd is also having a great 1st season as she picked up a prize for 2nd female vet to finish in 1.23.42. Edwina Butler was next home in 1.24.59 with Brian Russell not far behind in 1.25.14. Chelly Brennan was a little nervous as this was her 1st triathlon but she was delighted with her race to finish in 1.26.53 with Peter Roche next home in 1.28.42. Caroline Russell came back here to Carrick, the scene of her debut triathlon last year, and was thrilled with her race to finish in 1.29.18 with Annette O’Mahony coming home next in 1.31.50. In the Try-athlon race, which just had a shorter 500m swim, the rest of the race being the same as the sprint triathlon, Martin Flynn and Shane McDonagh were making their debut. Just a few months ago they were both struggling to do more than 1 length of the pool without stopping and hadn’t really expected to be participating in any triathlons this year. It shows their determination that they were both on the start line here and they both had super races. Martin emerged about 20th out of the water and made up a few places on the bike but it was on the run, where he posted the fastest time of the day, that he made up the most places to finish 3rd overall in 1.15.48. A brilliant achievement for his 1st race. Shane had a pretty good swim and followed it up with a strong bike and run to finish 15th overall in 1.24.25.
