Dec 2009 Waterford Half Marathon The 13.1mile run started in Waterford and went out and back to Tramore with the pretty flat course ensuring some very fast times. It was hard not to get caught up with the pace of everyone else around you so some people started off very fast and had to slow down after a few miles to ensure they didn’t run out of steam for the last few miles. This race has been the main focus for many members since the triathlon season finished in September so everyone was quite nervous and anxious to do well especially as many have never raced this distance in a running race before. Davin Power was the pre race favourite to do well overall and he didn’t disappoint. He had a brilliant race to finish 24th overall in 1.18.23. Martin Kirwan and Shane Scadding ran together for the 1st 5 miles but Martin had the stronger legs and pulled away from Shane to finish strongly in 34th place in 1.21.19 with Shane finishing 42nd in 1.22.51. Barry Lambe was up and in action a bit earlier than most as he took part in a 90k charity cycle before doing the race so his legs were a little more tired but he still had an excellent race to finish in 1.25.48. Stephen Doyle, Stefan Green, Michael Bowes and Brian Slattery all had their sights on each other during the race with Stephen coming home ahead in 1.26.26, Stefan in 1.27.04, Michael in 1.27.20 and Brian in a delighted time of 1.28.37. Paul Hallahan was next home in 1.31.35 with Henry Moloney in 1.34.48. Dermot Power and Mark Hayden were within seconds of each other in 1.35.25 and 1.35.29 with Tom Brennan not far behind in 1.37.30. PJ Tobin hadn’t been doing much training over the previous few months so he was thrilled with his time of 1.38.29 with Brian Russell also delighted with his time of 1.40.17. Siobhán Kennedy was 1st of the female club members home with a very strong run for her 1st attempt at this distance to finish in 1.40.59. Dots (David) Connolly who is training for an Ultra marathon next March was happy with his performance to finish in 1.41.41. Siobhán Dunphy was our next female home after a very strong run to finish in 1.42.45 with John Kinsella not far behind in 1.43.50. Johnny Brennan was next home in 1.44.58. Helen Whyte, Norma Goggin and Fiona McCarthy got into a nice pace together after a few miles and pushed and encouraged each other to the finish line with Fiona finishing in 1.46.12, Helen in 1.46.21 and Norma in 1.46.24, all absolutely thrilled with their times. Eleanor Carey surprised herself by finishing in a strong time of 1.50.34 with Carol Sinnott just behind in 1.52.35. Caroline Russell was delighted with her 1st half marathon to finish in 1.57.53 with Annette O’Mahony and Ger Hearne home next in 1.59.07 and 2.00.09 respectively. All the hard work paid off for Olive Costello also who finished in 2.08.10 for her longest run ever. Louis Carroll was unfortunate to have to pull out after 4 miles with an infection on his toe giving him problems. |
