13th July 2010 - Ironman countdown begins The time has finally arrived for our 13 Ironman hopefuls with Ironman Switzerland taking place next weekend in Zurich and Ironman UK taking place the following weekend in Bolton. Waterford Triathlon Club has one of the largest Irish contingents to head over to do Ironman Switzerland which consists of a 3.8k swim in Lake Zurich, 180k cycle followed by a 42k marathon run in temperatures of up to 30 degrees. The expected finish times will be between 10hrs and 16hrs. Everyone has been training hard over the past few months, having to get out and train no matter what the weather and not being allowed to have too many lazy days. Some have done an Ironman before but this year the training and the lead up to the race was much easier with so many to train with and lend encouragement. All the training is done now, it’s just a matter of ticking over for the next few days and staying injury free. ie. no D.I.Y or housework being done by anyone! Those competing in Switzerland include Shane Scadding, Tom Casey, Aubrey Storey, Martin Kirwan, Noel Ryan, Stephen Doyle, Marc O’Cathasaigh, Brian Slattery, Barry Lambe, Michael Bowes and Mark Hayden. Kieran Eaton is taking part in Ironman UK. Gavin Quinlan was unfortunate to have an accident on his bike last week while out doing his last long cycle which may have jeopardized his race participation this year. He won’t know for definite until this week. We wish him a speedy recovery. Best of Luck to all the lads. You can track progress of everyone during the race by logging on to www.ironman.com early on Sun. 25th July (for Switz) & Sun. 1st Aug (for UK).
