5th July 2010 - 3.8k Open Water Swim

The Waterford Open Water swim club held their first open water swim in Dunmore East last weekend with over 70 eager swimmers taking the plunge.  The swimmers had a mammoth task ahead of them though, as this was not just any ole dip in the sea, it was 3.8k.  The course involved 2 laps of swimming from the nice calm waters on Strand beach to swim around buoys quite far out where it got very choppy with strong swells which was quite unexpected and proved difficult to stay on course.  There were many brave swimmers who are used to long open water swims who swam without a wetsuit but all of our club members opted for the warmth, buoyancy and safety of the neoprene.  Apart from those training for the Ironmen, most had not swam this distance before, especially in the sea.

1st out of the water was our own club member Chris Mintern, who at only 15yrs, had a brilliant swim to complete the distance in 54.44mins.  Stephen Doyle was next out in 57.44mins with Mark Nugent out in 4th place in 61.44mins.  Paul Wyse did it in 1.20.52, Tom Casey in 1.21.58, Marc O’Cathasaigh 1.24.41, Barry Lambe 1.25.06, Michael Bowes 1.27.30, Derek Barrett 1.28.17, PJ Tobin 1.28.57, Colin Fanning 1.29.37, Gavin Quinlan 1.30.27, Martin Kirwan 1.32.25, Ide McEnery 1.32.41, Kieran Eaton 1.34.31 and Liam Power 1.57.04.  A brilliant achievement from everyone.
