Dec 2009 Club Duathlon With the early frost that was everywhere, there were fears of having to cancel the cycle section and just do a long run but the icy roads cleared in time to ensure the 5k run, 19k cycle and 3k run went ahead as planned. There was a bit of excitement when Shane Scadding and Stefan Green turned up on a tandem bike both dressed as Santa with plans to do the race. It was quite cold so it was hard to get going on the run and plenty more layers had to be put on for the cycle. Brian Slattery and the 2 Santas were leading heading out onto the bike with Paul Hallahan, Maurice McCartan and John Kinsella not far behind but Brian pedalled hard to maintain the lead to win comfortably in 1.12.16, his 1st victory. Maurice McCartan came home 2nd in 1.13.30 with the 2 Santas next in 1.13.50. Siobhán Dunphy and Siobhán Kennedy came in together after the 1st run but Siobhan Dunphy, being the stronger cyclist, made a getaway on the bike and stayed ahead to win in 1.17.53. This was Siobhán Kennedy’s 1st time doing a duathlon so she was happy to finish in 1.20.34 with Jacinta Power, also doing this for the 1st time coming home 3rd in 1.25.42. Tom Casey boiled up a big pot of soup in his campervan which everyone was grateful for afterwards. |
