5th May 2010 - High performances continue at Limerick Triathlon

Last weekend saw one of the largest pool based triathlons take part in University Limerick with almost 500 competitors taking part in the Olympic distance and sprint distance races.  There were 2 starts to each race with 10 lanes in the 50m pool with up to 12 swimmers in each lane which got quite hectic at times.  Competitors in the Olympic distance race had to swim 1500m followed by 40k cycle and a 10k run.

Shane Scadding did not have a great swim, to emerge 33rd out of the water but he made up for it on the bike to post the 2nd fastest time and together with the 7th fastest run of the day, was enough for him to finish 6th overall, 1st in his age-group, in 2hrs 02mins.  Stephen Doyle had a fantastic swim to emerge 4th out of the water.  He knew he would lose some places on the bike and run but he had a brilliant race to finish 22nd overall in 2hrs 09mins.  Stefan Green was next home, with the run being his strongest to finish 25th overall in 2hrs 11mins, 2nd in his age-group.  Swimming is Martin Kirwan’s Achilles heel and he had a lot of time to make up after emerging 129th out of the water but after posting the 6th fastest bike of the day together with a strong run brought him up to 30th overall in 2hrs 13mins.  Peter Barry has improved his swimming lots since last year but still came out 115th out of the pool but his super bike and run times brought him up to 32nd overall in 2hrs 14mins.  Michael Bowes was the same, playing catch up after the swim, but he fought back great to finish 44th overall in 2hrs 17mins.  This was Mark Hayden’s 3rd ever Triathlon with the swim being his strongest of the 3 disciplines.  He finished 58th overall in 2hrs 20mins.  Tom Casey also had a lot of cyclists to catch and overtake after his swim so he was delighted with his time of 2hrs 26mins.  Edward Walsh was next home in 2hrs 35mins.

We had 4 members in the Sprint race which consisted of a 500m swim, 20k cycle and 5k run.  Louis O’Carroll had a brilliant swim to post the 25th fastest time of the day but he lost a bit of time on the bike as he had to borrow one for the day and struggled through an injured foot so was happy with his race to finish in 1hrs 25mins.  Siobhán Kennedy was pretty nervous before her debut today, especially with the swim but she need not have worried as she finished in 1.27.00, 1st female vet.  Carol Sinnott was a bit tired after a wedding the night before but she put in a great performance to finish in 1.27.51.  Roisín O’Grady didn’t have much time for preparation as she barely arrived in time to put her bike in transition before the race but she finished in a delighted time of 1hr 38mins.
