Martin sets new record at Fenor Duathlon

Last weekend we held the 2nd race of our Duathlon series, this time in Fenor.  Opinions vary on which course is tougher, Butlerstown or Fenor, with both courses being totally different and each to suit either the stronger runner or cyclist.  We had our largest entry to date for Fenor, this being our 3rd year to hold it there, with 140 athletes, with 50 of these taking part in both races of our series.

The 1st 5k run takes in the views of Ballyscanlon lake and has a tough hill in it which needs to be paced wisely, with the 20k cycle being a bit technical in parts but also had a strong wind which always seemed to be against you.  The 2nd 3k run is an out and back course, with the advantage (or disadvantage) that people can see who is behind them.

After the 1st run, Kenny Curran (Carrick Tri) and John Meade were 1st into Transition closely followed by Martin Kirwan (Waterford Tri), Paddy Quinn (Ennis Tri) and Chris Mintern (Waterford Tri).  Martin had a powerful cycle to return back in 1st place with the fastest bike split of the day, over 2mins ahead of his nearest competitor, Eddy O’Donoghue (Carrick Tri) who had moved up to 2nd place with Paddy Quinn just seconds behind.  Martin actually pulled away from his pursuers on the 2nd run to win easily in 58.28mins and set a new course record in the process, his 2nd duathlon win this season.  Paddy Quinn outran Eddy to finish in 2nd place in 60.56 with Eddy finishing 3rd in 61.13.

In the ladies race, Deirdre Keane had a good lead on her competitors after the 1st run with Chelly Brennan, Siobhán Dunphy and Clare Fowler coming in close together. Deirdre and Siobhán both posted the fastest bike splits with Deirdre maintaining her lead and Siobhán moving to 2nd with Jacinta Power’s strong bike brining her into 3rd place. They each maintained their positions on the 2nd run with Deirdre 1st home in 72.13, Siobhán (Waterford Tri Club) 2nd in 73.58 and Jacinta (Waterford AC) 3rd in 76.52.

The Men’s Vets race was between 3 men who know each other well and each having a different strength on the day.  Darryl Hale (Waterford Tri Club) lead the group after the 1st run but Tom Casey (Waterford Tri Club) posted the fastest bike of the three to lead heading out onto the 2nd run but Rolf Power (Carrick Tri Club) was hot on his heels and after posting the strongest 2nd run time of the three, won 1st prize to finish in 64.56 with Tom just behind in 65.24 and Darryl 3rd in 66.53.

Jenny Kervick of Waterford Tri Club claimed 1st Female Vet prize to finish in 81.23 with Clare Fowler 2nd home in 83.10 and Edwina Butler 3rd in 84.51.

Chris Mintern of Waterford Tri Club was the clear winner of the Junior race to finish an amazing 8th overall in 63.29.  Damon Crowley also had a great race to finish 2nd Junior male in 74.09 with Aoife Trihy of Sportif Waterford Cycling Club the winner of the Female Junior race in 1hr 37mins.

Full results plus photos can be found on our homepage.  Waterford Triathlon club would like to thank all the club members who marshalled on the day and also thank the residents of Fenor, the Gardai, Fenor GAA and Mother McHugh’s pub for all their help with making the race possible and such a great success.
