25th April 2010 - Club dominate Crystal Clear Triathlon

The following day, right on our doorstep, Waterford Crystal swimming club held a Triathlon in the Waterford Crystal sports centre with 100 participants.  We had 15 members take part, some doing a race for the 1st time so there were plenty of nervous bodies around, asking questions, looking for tips, watching others.  The race consisted of a 500m pool swim, 20k cycle and 3k run.  Again, as competitors estimated their swim times, there were 5 starts with approx 20 in each start with the fastest and pre race favourites in the 4th and 5th starts.

Martin Kirwan, Stefan Green, Tom Casey and Colin Fanning started in the 4th wave with Shane Scadding and Davin Power in the final wave about 20mins later so it was hard to tell who was ahead of who at any stage.  Kevin Shelly of Dan Morrissey CC was also in the 4th wave to liven up the race competition.

Shane and Davin were 5th and 8th respectively out of the water and also posting the 3rd and 4th fastest times respectively on the bike.  Davin had the fastest run split of the day with Shane posting the 2nd fastest.  As with pool swims, you can be unlucky to get caught behind a slower swimmer who will not allow you to overtake which is what happened to Martin Kirwan who emerged 38th out of the water.  He took out his frustration on the bike though to post the 2nd fastest bike time overall and 3rd fastest run split.  Stefan was the 3rd fastest swimmer of the day with competitive bike and run times.  Overall, we did not know who had won the race until the results were announced as times had to be adjusted to allow for the difference in wave starts.

Waterford Triathlon Club took 4 out of the top 5 places with Shane Scadding pronounced the race winner in 48.01mins with Davin Power 3rd overall in 50.31mins, Martin Kirwan 4th overall in 50.58mins and Stefan Green 5th overall in 51.53mins.

Colin Fanning was next club member home in 12th place in 55.45mins with Tom Casey 15th overall in 57.08mins to claim 1st vet prize.  John Brennan was next home in 22nd place in 59.44mins with Stephen Butler 28th overall in 61.00mins and Aidan McCarthy just behind in 61.37mins.  Darryl Hale was competing in his 1st Triathlon and had a bad swim but made up plenty of places on the bike and after posting the 7th fastest run time, finished 35th overall in 62.17mins.  This was also Mark Daly’s 1st Triathlon so he was delighted with his race to finish in 64.22mins.  Ann Hennebry also lost a lot of time in the swim as she got caught behind someone slower but she had a great race overall to finish in 68.26mins, to claim a prize for 1st female vet.  Conor Murphy and John Moloney were also doing a triathlon for the 1st time so were happy with their race to finish in 69.01mins and 73.10mins respectively.  Olive Costello did not enjoy the swim but felt good when she got on the bike and had a great race in finish in 73.43mins.
