24th April 2010 - Triathlon Season begins with North Tipp Sprint Triathlon Last weekend saw the 1st of the Triathlon races of this season take place with a National series race in Nenagh which consisted of a 750m pool swim followed by a 20k cycle and 5k run. With over 220 competitors, there were 6 lanes with 6 swimmers in each with 7 starts to the race as athletes had to estimate their swim times with the fastest swimmers starting last which made it a very long day for some. This was the day to show how well the training had gone over the winter period by putting all 3 disciplines together. Noel Ryan and Gavin Quinlan started in the 4th wave with Shane Scadding, Stephen Doyle and Mark Hayden in the last wave start. Gavin was off to a bad start as he slept in too long and had to eat his porridge in the car en route. They both had a good swim with Gavin out 1min ahead of Noel and also gaining time on him on the cycle but Noel had the stronger legs on the run to overtake Gavin on the latter part of the run to finish 55th overall in 1.13.50 with Gavin 60th overall in 1.14.33. In the final start, where the eventual winner would come from, the competition was fierce with all the pre-race favourites starting here. Stephen Doyle had a brilliant swim to have the 4th fastest time overall with Shane out in 17th place and Mark in 19th place. Shane lost a bit of time at the start of the cycle as he decided that today was the day to try to put his cycle shoes on his feet while they were clipped into his pedals, while cycling. It proved very awkward and he definitely needs more practice! He had a great cycle to post the 6th fastest time overall and headed out onto the run in 4th place. He thought he would lose positions here as he had missed a lot of run training due to injury but he was actually gaining time on athletes ahead, but as he ran out of road, he maintained his 4th position overall to finish in 1.03.18 and 1st in his age-group. Stephen had a great cycle and despite crashing off his bike as he entered transition, was ok to carry on with the race and was delighted with his performance to finish 20th overall in 1.08.39. Mark hasn’t done as much training as the others as he has just finished his college exams so he was delighted with his race to finish 67th overall in 1.15.20. All 5 clubmembers are part of 14 members who are taking part in an Ironman this summer so training has obviously been going well.
