18th April 2010 -New Ultra Marathoner Last weekend almost 2500 runners took part in either the half marathon, full marathon or the ultra marathon in Connemara. David (Dots) Connolly was one of less than 200 runners who took on the enormous challenge of the ultra marathon and has spent the past few months pounding the roads around Waterford. It was an early start for the Ultra marathon runners who had 39miles to do, with the other races joining the course at various times and locations. There was not a cloud in the sky with temperatures of over 20degrees which made it very difficult to stay hydrated and cool and sunburnt free. Dots was pretty much on target after completing the marathon distance in 4hrs 30mins but suffered a bit in the subsequent 13 miles especially with his aid bag not where it should have been so he had no electrolytes or other nutritional foods which he had planned on. He persevered however to finish the 39.3 miles in 8hrs 22mins. A fantastic achievement and one which not many can lay claim to. Marc O’Cathasaigh ran the half marathon with his brother to finish in 1hr 49mins with Noel Ryan accompanying his sister in her 1st half marathon to complete in a very comfortable 1hr 56mins. |
