Dunmore East Triathlon Race Report 20/06/09

Final Results

We held our 4th annual sprint Triathlon in Dunmore East amid glorious sunshine and calm crystal seas which was the total opposite from last year’s weather which will go down in the history books.  We had over 500 competitors on the day from far and wide including 30 teams so there was a great buzz of excitement before the race start.  There were a lot of newbies to the sport on the day which this race always attracts but everyone was very friendly and encouraging to everyone else especially Elena Maslova, hot favourite to win the ladies race, who, it was reported, mended a puncture for an inexperienced athlete in transition before the race started.

There were 2 starts to the swim (which was a good 750m) with the Individual males under 40 in the 1st start and everyone else 10 mins later.  David O’Toole, from the Under 23 development squad, pulled away from the rest of the field right from the whistle and emerged from the swim a minute and a half ahead of Mark Dunne from Pulse and Trevor Woods from Cork Tri Club who were out next.  David stretched his lead on the bike by another 30 seconds or so but Trevor did not give up and pulled back 2mins on the run but it wasn’t enough to catch David who won in 1.15.25 with Trevor 2nd in 1.15.40.  Wayne Reid from Athlone Tri Club posted the fastest run of the day by far with 24.57mins for the 7k run to cross the line in 3rd place in 1.16.25 but there was a surprise to come in the form of Matt Molloy from Bike and Run Tri club in the UK who had started in the 2nd wave 10mins later with the other over 40’s.  He had the 2nd fastest swim of the day and with his bike and run on par with the winners, his time of 1.15.44 was enough to secure him 3rd place overall with Wayne to finish 4th overall.

In the ladies race, Amy Wolfe from Cork Tri emerged 1st out of the water in 13.41mins, 2mins ahead of her nearest rival Catherine Brown from Carrick Tri in 15.40mins who was also another minute ahead of the next bunch of ladies which included Lisa Howley (Wicklow Tri), Anne O’Leary (Piranha), Brianne Mulvihill (Carrick), Aoife Lynch (Pulse) and Elena Maslova (Piranah).  Elena pedalled hard on the bike though which brought her up to 2nd place heading out on the run about 1 min. behind Amy.  She put in a superb run to catch and pass Amy to finish 1st female overall in 1.22.15 with Amy 2nd in 1.23.07.  There was a battle for 3rd place with Aoife Lynch and Joyce Wolfe where it all came down to the run where Aoife was the stronger and finished 3rd in 1.26.09.

In the Junior’s, there was also a battle going on with Louis O’Carroll from Waterford Tri and Eric Stears out of the swim in the same time and both posting the same cycle time which left the decider to the run where Eric was stronger to win in 1.28.27 with Louis 2nd in 1.28.43.  David Mahon from Carrick Tri was 3rd in 1.31.45.

We also had prizes for all the age categories where results can be found elsewhere on our website.

We would like to thank all the marshals, most of who were from the Waterford Tri club, the Irish Coast guard, Comeragh cycle club, Waterford AC, Carrick Tri club and all the family and friends for their hard work throughout the weekend.  We also had great help from the gardai and the residents of Dunmore East which helped the day to pass smoothly without any incident.
