After 20 years of playing soccer I finally got fed up of hoofing the ball around on wet cold Sunday mornings. I then became interested in other activities or “leisure” type sports such as surfing, mountain biking and snowboarding. However, while I enjoyed all of those (and still do), I decided that I needed something more disciplined, challenging and competitive. So saw an ad in the local gym for the Waterford Tri Club and decided that this would be the thing for me. Only in my second season now but have definitely caught the bug and with so much room for improvement there’s not much chance of me losing interest. There is still an on-going battle between socialising and taking training and races seriously but I know that somewhere along the way I’ll find a balance! Looking forward to improving my times this season, racing abroad and maybe doing the half iron man in Kenmare.

I took up triathlon in 2004 for the challenge. I had just learned to swim the year before and I completed my first Olympic distance event in the Dublin City Triathlon in 2004. I enjoy the sport as it offers plenty variety in training and a lot of enjoyment on race days, not to mention the social aspect and the 'feel good factor' associated with keeping fit. I completed the 'Escape from Alcatraz' triathlon in June, 2006, and I am hoping to compete in some races on the Irish circuit during the summer months also.

I started triathlons because of continuous injuries. I come from a running background, mainly middle distance and cross-country, gave it up in my teens due to women, booze and nightclubs! Started running again in my late 20’s on and off due to injuries!!! Triathlons are a great way for me to stay fit and compete.  I can still train i.e. swim and cycle when the old legs are playing up. I also come from an outdoor sport background, i.e. windsurfing and kayak instructor, archery etc…less stressful sports. My main aims for the coming season are to improve on my past performances and try to keep anyone younger than me behind me.  It’s definitely getting harder…

I was always into exercise and keeping fit.  I used to do running and cross-country as a school kid but gave it up when I went to College.  Started back running a few years ago and also did hill-walking. Got ‘talked into’ doing triathlons in 2003.  Just learned to swim a few months before my first race in Carrick and still thought I’d drown as soon as I got into the water.  Best buzz ever, floating down that river!  Haven’t progressed much since then as I don’t do enough training but I love doing the races and the whole social scene attached to it. My aim for this year is to try to complete an Olympic distance race without too much pain with virtually no cycling done in months!

I first started competing in triathlon’s in 2005, my first race was in Carrick on Suir where I achieved a personal best. I joined the club as I had been advised this was the most efficient means of training and a great social aspect also. As there are many veteran tri-athletes in our club, training programs for beginners were very much available and one to one coaching also, which proved very effective. I am also involved in rowing and sailing and I am currently a member of the A.C.S.E club in Waterford this is where my triathlon training really shows its benefits as we hope to compete in the Atlantic Challenge competition in Italy this coming July where we are representing Ireland which is something I am looking forward to immensely.
