Waterford Duathlon Race Report 05/04/08 Race Report Waterford Triathlon Club held their first Duathlon in the scenic Fenor last weekend. It was the perfect setting for the race which attracted over 120 competitors on the day from all over Ireland. It was a tough course which consisted of a 5k run around Ballyscanlon lakes, followed by a 19k cycle in towards Tramore and out towards Dunhill and finished with a 3k run. There were only seconds separating the leaders after the first run but as it was quite windy, many people found the cycle difficult even on the downhill sections so this broke up the field a lot. Keith Heary from Carlow Tri Club was 1st back off the bike with a clear lead of almost a minute on Tadhg Cronin from Piranha Tri Club in Dublin who also had a good lead on Mark Nolan from Cork and Sean Collier from the Carrick Tri Club. The 4 of these remained in this position to the finish with Keith winning in 59.41mins, Tadgh finishing in 1.00.26 and Mark Nolan in 3rd in 1.02.17. In the ladies race, Katharina Baldinger from 3d Tri club, Dublin, took the lead from the start and increased the lead on the bike and had an impressive win in 1.05.46, finishing 9th overall. Louise Nolan from Carlow Tri Club finished 2nd in 1.13.58 with Joanne O’Sullivan from Belpark Tri Club in Dublin in 3rd in 1.17.47. Tom Casey from Waterford Tri Club had a great race to claim 1st prize in the Vets, finishing 8th overall in 1.05.24. Michael McGrath from Carlow Tri Club was 2nd vet home in 1.09.40 just ahead of Peter Meaney in 1.10.05. Marie Casey Breen from Carrick Tri Club was 1st female vet home in 1.24.41 with Fiona Holland 2nd in 1.29.41. Louis O’Carroll from Waterford Tri Club was 1st male junior home in 1.18.59. 1st team home on the day was the Junior team of Matthew Sills and Ryan Butler who had a great race. Waterford Triathlon Club would like to thank the people and residents of Fenor for their very hospitable welcome to the club and all the athletes who participated in the duathlon in Fenor. Everyone had a great day and look forward to coming back again next year.
